Come out to court on Friday

Please come to Federal Court in Montreal (30 McGill St., near Square Victoria metro) on Friday, 20 June, at 9:30 am in support of Adil Charkaoui's five-year struggle for justice.

In April, after a new certificate was issued under the new law, Adil submitted a motion for habeas corpus, on the basis that the law under which he is being denied his liberty is illegal. Habeas corpus is a legal action to defend individual liberty against arbitrary imprisonment by the state. It is the same principle under which the US Supreme Court last week upheld the rights of prisoners in Guantanamo. Charkaoui will thus simultaneously be demanding his freedom from the unjust conditions that have been arbitrarily imposed on him and challenging the new law.

The government, however, is opposing Charkaoui's right to habeas corpus.

Your presence in court is an important act of solidarity and will provide tangible moral support for the Charkaoui family.
