The Coalition Justice for Adil Charkaoui presents the "People's Camp", which will take place on Friday, 23 May in the working class, immigrant neighbourhood of Parc Extension. The half-day, multi-media info-fair is organized in solidarity with the five security certificate detainees - Hassan Almrei (coming up to seven years in prison), Adil Charkaoui, Mohamed Harkat, Mahmoud Jaballah, Mohammad Mahjoub - and their families. Consisting of art displays, info-tables, videos, a mini-workshop series and a speak-out, the People's Camp will arm people with knowledge about immigration 'security' measures, racial profiling and how to fight them.

On Thursday, 31 January, the Supreme Court of Canada will hear a bid by Adil Charkaoui to have the ‘security certificate’ against him quashed on the grounds that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) destroyed sources of secret evidence.

Just as it was recently discovered that the CIA destroyed records, it was revealed in 2005 that CSIS destroyed evidence in the file of security certificate detainee Adil Charkaoui. On January 31st, Charkaoui will be challenging the legality of the destruction of evidence in his file by CSIS at the Supreme Court.

Report on day of action, update and call to action

Community delegations visited the offices of 16 members of Parliament throughout the island of Montreal on Friday, 7 December. Around fifty people - individuals as well as members of groups like Solidarity across Borders, the Immigrant Workers Centre, le Comité BAIL, CEGEP St-Laurent and McGill student groups, Palestinian and Jewish Unity, the Centre for Philippine Concerns and others - took part in the day of action to urge MPs to vote against new security certificate legislation, which the Conservative government is currently ramming through Parliament at a pace allowing for no discussion or opposition. Similar delegations also took place in Sudbury, Peterborough, Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa.

On October 22nd, the federal Conservative Party introduced Bill C-3, new security certificate legislation. According to media reports, the federal Liberal Party immediately signaled their intention of supporting the bill. The New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Bloc Québecois affirmed that they plan to oppose the bill as it stands.
