UNDER THE HOOD, a Voyage into the World of Torture retraces the stories of several people who were illegally tortured by 'democratic countries' convinced of their absolute right to do so. It tells the unknown stories of the victims of a new barbarity and gives a human face to the suffering. Patricio Henriquez looks back at the history of torture, which was systematized by the Catholic Inquisition in the Middle Ages, as well as at the shameful history of American complicity with torturers and calls for vigilance.
PATRICIO HENRIQUEZ. Born in Chile in 1948, Patricio Henriquez began his career as a journalist and tv producer for the University of Chile. Following the coup d'état on 11 September 1973, he was imprisoned. Upon his release, two months later, he sought exile in Canada. Since January 1974, Henriquez has lived in Montreal where he works as a documentary film-maker. In 1995, with Raymonde Provencher and Robert Cornellier, he founded Macumba International, a film production house dedicated to making international documentary films. His films include: Désobéier (2005) and Le côté obscur de la Dame Blance (2006).
ADIL CHARKAOUI was arrested in May 2003 under an immigration security certificate. On 21 August 2003, an Immigration Canada Pre-removal Risk Assessment (PRRA) officer determined that Charkaoui would be at risk of cruel and unusual punishment, torture or death if forced to return to Morocco. This evaluation was confirmed in October 2007. Canada has nevertheless continued to pursue the deportation proceedings against him.
