JUSTICE FOR ADIL CONTINGENT
in the Status for All! March

corner of Victoria and Van Horne (metro Plamondon, Van Horne exit)

Justice for Adil contingent will march under the banner "Solidarity is our Security!"

The Coalition Justice for Adil Charkaoui will form a contingent against racist immigration 'security' measures on Sunday, 4 May in the Solidarity Across Borders "Status for All!" march.

The recent introduction of the "special advocate" into the security certificate process has only served to legitimize an unjust, two-tier system based on racial profiling and to open the door to a greater use of secrecy in other areas of immigration and criminal law.

Armed with the new security certificate law, both the federal government and Federal Court have signalled their intention to rapidly "finish" the five current security certificate cases. Under the 'new' but no less fundamentally unjust legislation, the cases could "finish" either in indefinite house arrest or deportation to torture. The groundwork for public acceptance of such brutal treatment has been laid by a series of irresponsible, deeply racist, media attacks depicting the detainees as "dangerous foreigners". Through this process, the detainees and their entire families have been cast out of normal legal protection, impoverished and pushed to the margins of society.

The march will take place in the largely working class, immigrant neighbourhood of Côte des neiges with the overall message, "Status for all! No to poverty, racism and racial profiling!" The march is organized by Solidarity Across Borders as part of a cross-Canada day of action for immigrant rights, and is also part of Montreal's MayWorks festival (full announcement).
