Call to Action: New Law on Security Certificates

The final vote in parliament on the "new" Security Certificate legislation (Bill C-3), has not yet taken place. If Bill C-3 is voted through Parliament, it will go to the Senate where it will undergo the same process as in Parliament (first and second readings followed by hearings in front of a committee, report stage, and a final vote). Regardless of whether or not the new law on Security Certificates is in place, the Supreme Court decision, suspended for one year, will come into effect on February 23rd and the old Security Certificate legislation will be defunct.

Over the past months, federal MPs' offices have received many calls from all over the country, with many even receiving visits from delegations.

We ask that you continue to call your MPs until they assure you that they will vote against Bill C-3.

When contacting your MP, ask them to vote against C-3 and to make a public statement opposing Bill C-3. Tell them that a "special advocate" will not resolve anything and that it is an unacceptable process that will only perpetuate a two-tiered justice system in Canada. Ask them very clearly: are you in favour of a law that allows arbitrary detention, the use of secret information, indefinite detention and deportation to torture? Are you in favour of a two-tiered justice system? Let them know that the Canadian Bar Association and the Barreau du Quebec have said that C-3 is still unconstitutional.

The contact information for all MPs can be found at the parliamentary website; click here for a list of priority MPs. As the NDP have already indicated that they are in favour of abolition of security certificates, we recommend that you focus on the Liberals, the Bloc and the Conservatives.

Please send us their responses: justiceforadil@riseup.net.

We also invite you to hand out postcards demanding that MPs vote against the new Bill.

You can distribute the postcards throughout your own neighbourhood (just stick them in people's mailboxes). To obtain postcards, write to the Coalition Justice for Adil Charkaoui: justiceforadil@riseup.net or call us at 514 848 7583.
